Just under the sky, edition of only 200 copies
Right under the sky is a book about life, a book about my life.
Or rather, a part of my life where separations took a big place, people who meant a lot, several good friends and my dog who left this world at the same time. It was a period with a lot of darkness, a period that made me stop, a period where branches had to take their place.
The branches were therapy, a way to get through.
Old Polaroid film was the obvious choice of medium, partly because you could make a picture right away, and partly because it suddenly became a physical process. It was exactly what I needed, no extra work on the computer, just taking my picture there in the studio and snapping the Polaroid, putting the finished picture on the table and then leaving it like that. Over time, the pictures became stronger and stronger for me, more important and more important. The symbols became clearer and clearer, here the branches go in different directions in the clump, there they stretch away from each other but in the next stage they stretch back towards each other, even over each other. It became something human, something that felt very close to me.
Now it is winter, the trees are bare of leaves and I enjoy the nakedness of the landscape. I can look up at the crown of the birches and see the branches against the white, cloudy sky.
I feel warm in my body from feeling present, a small part of everything.
And I look at the branches high up just under the sky in a whole new way.
